An impatient barber, a suspicious partner or an enraged neighbour can be murderers, revealed data released by the Delhi Police on Tuesday. The numbers have become a cause for concern for the force.
In the first quarter of 2017, 17 people were allegedly murdered over trivial issues like arguments after consuming alcohol, quarrel over sleeping at a night shelter and playing DJ during Holi celebrations.
Of 127 murders that took place till March 31, nearly 13% were due to sudden provocation. However, the number has reduced marginally as compared to the first quarter of 2016.
In one of the cases reported in south-west Delhi’s Badarpur, 20-year-old Pawan was killed because he used a comb at the barber’s shop. The barber attacked Pawan with a pair of scissors. In another case, 60-year-old Uttam Prakash, a resident of outer Delhi, was attacked with a blunt object following a quarrel with accused Saurabh during their drinking session.
Delhi Police Public Relations Officer Madhur Verma said, “It’s a little alarming to see that 17 reported cases of murder took place due to trivial issues. If this is a trend that’s emerging, then it’s is a cause for concern because these are not preventable murders.”
Other reasons
As per the data, one of the major reasons for the reported murders was enmity. So far, 29 murders have taken place here due to enmity, which has increased by 3% from 2016.
However, the number of planned murders have come down by 4% this year. In 2017, four people were allegedly murdered during and after robbery and theft, while the number of such murders in in 2016 was 13.
