Twelve traders have been booked by the Delhi Government’s Revenue Department over the past one week for violating the norms for stocking acid.

In compliance with the directions issued by the Supreme Court, officials said, the Department officials inspected 97 premises involved in stocking acid for business out of which violations were identified at 12 premises.

“In 10 cases where violations have been found, fine was levied against the violators. A total fine of Rs.1,09,000 was imposed on them,” Revenue Secretary Gyanesh Bharti said.

As per the Supreme Court order, no seller will be allowed to stock or sell acid without licence. Buyers will be sold the chemical only after they show their government-issued photo identity proof and purpose of purchase.

The seller will be obliged to record the sale details and submit them with the local police within three days along with disclosing all stocks to the local Sub-Divisional Magistrate within 15 days. Failing to do so could lead to a fine of Rs.50,000.

Apart from that, acid will not be sold to anyone below 18 years of age.

Also, only non-harmful form of acid will be available over the counter. In laboratories, hospitals and other institutions where acids are used, a person will be placed in-charge of storing acid, and of compulsory checking of students and personnel leaving the institution.
