: Figures released by the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) show that over Rs. 7 crore in cash has been seized at the Delhi Airport since the demonetisation announcement. In addition, 37 kg gold, 15 kg gold jewellery and 10.87 kg silver were seized from various violators during this period.

The data is for seizures between November 10, two days after old Rs. 500 and Rs. 1,000 notes ceased to be legal tender, and December 29. The seized cash was in both old and new notes.

The biggest seizure, of Rs.3 crore, was made on November 25. On December 6, 16 kg gold concealed in diapers was seized from a group of passengers. Six filers, including two infants, were a part of the group that had arrived from Dubai.

Tax evasion

“In many of these instances, the tax evasion angle is being probed,” said a CISF officer. Unaccounted foreign currency was also intercepted, with USD 105300 and 10500 Euros among the major detections.

The cash detected at the Mumbai airport during the same period was nearly two and a half times that of Delhi.

Similarly, gold detected there was nearly four times the figure reported in the Capital.

The consolidated national figures are Rs. 64.36 crore in cash, a whopping three tons of gold and nearly 38 kg silver.
