“It feels like the struggle was in vain. I lost my eyesight, have problems with my legs and hands, but the accused got to walk free,” said Kuljeet Singh, the DTC driver who saved the lives of 80 people in Govindpuri.
Courageous move
Mr. Singh was the driver on duty on the day of the blast. Near the Govindpuri bus depot, a passenger noticed a bag being left inside the bus and alerted him and the conductor. Mr. Singh’s immediate reaction was to drive the bus away from the market area.
“I wanted to take the bus away from the crowd. If the bag had exploded in the market area, more lives would have been lost. We evacuated the bus and I ran to throw the bag with the explosive into a nearby park. I was running back when it exploded,” Mr. Singh said.
His wife was six months’ pregnant when the incident happened. Because of the trauma of the day, Mr. Singh’s son, Deepak, was born pre-mature a month-and-a-half later.
“Doctors say that my wife’s pregnancy was affected by the shock she got from that day. Our son, however, was a healthy child. The only regret I have is that I will never be able to see my child,” Mr. Singh said.
‘Extremely disappointed’
Mr. Singh’s brother-in-law, Satish Kumar said that Mr. Singh was in his office when he received the news of the verdict.
“He was extremely disappointed. Seems like all his sacrifices were for nothing. His eyesight cannot be brought back, but at least the accused should have been given stringent punishment,” Mr. Kumar said.
