A school from Punjab’s Moga district, a Kendriya Vidyalaya from Hebbal in Karnataka, and a sports school from Sonipat, Haryana, claimed the top honours as the “greenest” schools of 2016 in India.
Union Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar gave away the Green Schools Awards, instituted by the New Delhi-based research and advocacy body Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), here on Wednesday.
Five schools from Delhi were also awarded for their contribution to environment such as awareness activities involving students and community, basic infrastructure such as composting pit, rainwater harvesting structure and solid waste collection points for waste segregation.
Winning Delhi schools
The Delhi schools that have been awarded include -- Father Agnel Senior Secondary School, Gautam Nagar, East Point School, Vasundhra Enclave, St George’s School, Alaknanda, ASN Senior Secondary School, Mayur Vihar, and Manava Bharati India International, Panchsheel Park.
The awards are given every year after a rigorous audit of how schools are walking the talk with respect to environmental practices and natural resource management. Every year, the audit and the awards focus on one aspect/ issue of resource management.
This year, the subject was water and sanitation.
