Youth with unaccounted cash held in Coimbatore

Accused says it was to be handed over to another person for jewellery trade.

Railway Police took into custody a 20-year-old person with an unaccounted cash of Rs. 89.12 lakh at the Coimbatore Junction on Thursday.

During a patrol on the platforms, they found Anand getting down with a bag from the Inter-City Express and moving about in a suspicious manner.On examination of the bag, it was found that it contained Rs. 89.12 lakh.

Anand said that it was handed over to him by one Gopi of Dharmapuri for delivering it to another person in Coimbatore for gold jewellery trade.

The police asked Gopi to come over to Coimbatore to explain the source of funds and provide accounts for the same.

Later, the police handed over Anand and the cash to the Income Tax Department for verification of accounts.


City Police have arrested Christopher Lawrence (24) of Puliakulam on charges of posing as a police officer and robbing a girl of her gold jewellery after intimidating her.

Earlier, he had threatened an 18-year-old girl from Mettuppalayam, while she was talking to a male friend at the bus stand in Gandhipuram and got away with her gold jewellery.

In another incident at Mahalingapuram in Pollachi, seven sovereigns of jewellery of Krishnaveni (63) was taken away by three persons posing as police personnel who offered her to keep her jewellery safe.

They approached the woman while she was walking towards her home and said it was not safe to wear jewellery as a woman was recently murdered in the area for jewellery.

They asked her to hand over the jewellery and pretended to wrap it with a paper and tied it on the pallu of her sari.

When she returned home, she found that the paper contained stones. She preferred a complaint with the police. Two arrested

Big Bazaar Police have arrested Chinnaraj (30) and Mohammed Shansah (23) on charges of resorting to a clash in a cinema on Wednesday.

It is learnt that the accused along with two other friends danced in the cinema watching the 3D version of ‘Shivaji the boss.’

When those seated in the back rows objected to the dancing, they picked up a quarrel with them that culminated in group clash. Hunt is on for the other two.

Man killed

Vinod (28) of Palakkad who was riding pillion, on a motorcycle was killed when he fell off the vehicle near Malumichampatti on Wednesday.

His friend Diensh (30) of Kinathukkadavu was riding the vehicle.

They were returning to Kinathukkadavu after making some purchases in Coimbatore.

Officer found dead

Guruvinder Singh (24), son of Gurmeet Singh of Punjab, working at the Naval Base in Goa was found hanging near the laundry room of the Navy’s training centre in Coimbatore.

The police said that he was here for a training programme.

Case against five

The police have registered a case against Ramachandran and four others on charges of picking up a fight over the right to work on a land taken on lease at Vellalore LG Nagar in Podanur.

They reportedly attacked Kalimuthu (47) and Nagendran (42). Kalimuthu sustained cut injuries.

Migrant worker booked

The police have registered a case against Rajesh Kumar (18) of Odisha employed in a private mill in Annur on charges of sexually exploiting a 17-year-old female co-worker, promising to marry her. Investigations are on.

PDS rice seized

The police on Wednesday intercepted an autorickshaw and seized 900 kg of rice meant for Public Distribution System (PDS).

It was concealed under vegetables and was being illegally transported to Kerala. Ansari (19) and Dharmaraj (24) were arrested.

Sand mining

Ganesan (36), a truck driver, was arrested for illegally quarrying sand from Bhavanisagar dam in Sirumugai Range.
