The Coimbatore District Rural Police on Friday arrested Vishant Kumar Mohanty (21), a native of Odisha, on charges of murdering a woman and her eight-year-old son.

According to the police, the body of a 32-year-old woman was found in a decomposed state near a poultry farm at Appanaickenpatty Pudur near Sulur in Coimbatore on December 8.

The body of a boy was also found about a kilometre from the location.

The police had registered a case under Section 174 (suspicious death) of the Criminal Procedure Code.

However, the post-mortem revealed that both of them were beaten to death. The police registered a case of murder and launched an investigation.

The police zeroed in on Vishant Kumar Mohanty, a casting mill worker, after finding out that the woman and the boy were living with him and were not seen for the last few days.

Upon questioning, they found that the deceased woman was Lakshmi Priya alias Mamuni (wife of Ashok Kumar Mohanty, relative of Vishant Kumar Mohanty). The boy was her son Babloo (8). Vishant Kumar had brought Lakshmi Priya from Odisha to Sulur about two months ago.

Quarrel

On December 3, a quarrel broke out between them and Vishant Kumar reportedly hit her with a wooden rolling pin. She died on the spot.

As Babloo had witnessed the incident, Vishant Kumar killed him too.

Case registered

Sulur Police registered a case of murder and remanded Vishant Kumar in custody. Further investigations are on.
