The Coimbatore Rural District Police on Saturday arrested a 24-year-old youth, Surya, on charges of murdering his six-year-old nephew.

According to Gomangalam Police, Surya’s sister Varshini had married in 2004. However, the child born to her was found to be mentally challenged, which resulted in her divorce. Despite her parent’s attempts to get her married for a second time, none were willing due to the child.

As such, Surya had decided to kill the child to help her sister. Along with the driver Murugan, they took the boy to a canal at Poosaripatti on August 4. They had allegedly hit the boy on the head with a bottle and pushed him into the canal. They had told Varshini that the boy had accidentally fallen into the canal.

The body was recovered near Palladam on Thursday. A post-mortem conducted on Friday revealed that the boy had died of head injuries.

Upon police interrogation, Surya confessed to the murder. Further investigations are on.
