Speaker after speaker at the education fair organised by The Hindu Education Plus here on Wednesday told students not to succumb to parents’ pressure in choosing a course at the higher education level. The fair will be open on Thursday from 10am to 6pm at the Suguna Kalyana Mandapam on the Avinashi Road.
The guest speakers R. Karthikeyan, managing director, GEMBA Management Consultant, Chennai, and Marabin Mainthan Muthaiah, a Tamil scholar and motivational speaker, too urged the parents not to influence their children and decide courses and institutions on their behalf.
Dr. Karthikeyan said that the parents should teach students to face reality and handle failures in life. If they did that there would not be cases of students committing suicides. Mr. Muthaiah said that there was no use in learning by rote and offered the analogy that those learnt so were as good as the doves that even while chanting about hunters’ tactics landed in his net. To draw the students attention he gave analogies from the world of cricket.
He too asked the students not to be afraid of failure. For, “failures were whip lashes that helped one run faster towards success in life.”Sheela Ramachandran, Vice-Chancellor, Avinashilingam University, who released the education directory, said that it was wrong on the part of parents and society to put pressure on students in Standards IX, and X and Plus-One to choose a discipline in higher education. The students should be allowed to choose a course of their choice at the appropriate time.She then asked the students not to choose a course based on what their friends, neighbours, or cousins have chosen. “What works for others need not work for you.”
She suggested that the students take the psychometric test at the fair.M. Saravanakumar, Dean — Regional Centre, Coimbatore Anna University, said that more than what and where to study, it was the ‘how’ that was more important. And, above all, positive attitude mattered more than anything else.Malarvizhi, chairperson, Sri Krishna Institutions; B. The Hindu conducted the fair with Sri Krishna Institutions as the title sponsor, Suryan FM as the radio partner, Nehru Group of Institutions, Sri Shakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology and Angel College of Engineering and Technology as co-sponsors and with support from The Hindu Tamil and Bodhi Psychometric Assessment and Training. Park Group of Institutions powered the event.Students could walk into the fair for registration for psychometric test on Thursday as well.
