Several events were held in the city on Wednesday to mark the World Stroke Day.
The P.S.G. Hospitals organised a ‘Walkathon’ to create awareness among the public. T.K. Rajasekaran, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), flagged off the event.
In a press release issued here, P.S.G. Institute of Medical Sciences and Research said that 15 lakh stroke cases were recorded annually in India. It was responsible for 41 per cent of the deaths in the country. Nearly 12 per cent of all strokes occur in those less than 40 years.
Women were at a higher risk of getting stroke. According to studies, one in five women faced the risk of stroke as opposed to one in six men.
Some stroke risk factors include diabetes, atrial fibrillation, depression, and hypertension..
The Sri Ramakrishna Hospital and S.N.R. and Sons College also held a stroke awareness rally with the objective of creating awareness about the treatment given to Acute Ischemic Stroke and dispel notions of no treatment being available for such cases.
AwarenessThe window period for treating stroke was 4.5 hours from onset of symptoms. Awareness about the early signs of stroke would go a long way, the hospital said.
C.V. Ramkumar, Chief Executive Officer of SNR Sons Charitable Trust, P. Sukumaran, Dean of Sri Ramakrishna Hospital, H. Balakrishnan, Principal and Secretary, S.N.R. Sons College, took part in the event.
World Stroke Day is observed annually on October 29 to spread awareness about stroke.
It is an initiative of World Stroke Organisation, the American Heart Association, and American Stroke Association.
