More than 100 students of the Departments of Zoology and Wildlife Biology of the Government Arts College in Udhagamandalam took part in an awareness march inside the college premises on Friday to celebrate World Elephant Day.
The World Elephant Day is celebrated on August 12 every year. “We wanted to create awareness among the 1,500 students studying in the college on the need to protect elephants,” said B. Ramakrishnan, assistant professor in wildlife biology, Government Arts College, Udhagamandalam, and member of the IUCN Asian Elephant Specialist Group.
The students wore elephant masks during the rally and called for efforts to be taken to save elephant population, corridors and habitats. Professors H. Mohanakrishnan, P. Kannan and B. Sivaraj, from the departments of zoology and wildlife biology, also took part in the awareness march.
The Theppakadu Elephant Camp would celebrate World Elephant Day on Saturday.
