Work has begun to reduce the width of diameter of roundtana at Kondalampatti Bypass on Bengaluru – Madurai National Highway here so that vehicular movement remains smooth.
With traffic congestion becoming a common problem in the city, various steps have been taken to reduce it. Congestion is common at roundtanas at Seelanaickenpatti, Kondalampatti, Thiruvakavundanur and AVR Junction which are located on the highway. Since movement of heavy vehicles, particularly long-trailer lorries, is affected on the highway due to the roundtana, the width of roundtana at Seelanaickenpatti and Thiruvakavundanur were reduced in the past years. The width of diameter of roundtana at Kondalampatti is over 35 metres disrupting vehicle movement.
Buses from Coimbatore have to take a U-turn at the roundtana to reach the city. Also, buses from Namakkal, Tiruchi and Madurai direction have to pass through the roundtana.
Vehicles from Nethimedu also pass through the roundtana. Hence, there is a heavy demand for reduction in the diameter of the roundtana and the proposal was cleared by the National Highways Authority of India.
Work has begun to demolish the outer layer of the roundtana which is maintained by a private company.
Officials said that after the demolition works, vehicles will have more space on the road to move freely.
Road users wanted the two bus stops near the roundtana to be moved little away.
