Work on four green parks that are being executed under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme at total cost of ₹1.93 crore is nearing completion and the parks will be thrown open for the public soon.
The Salem City Municipal Corporation is one of the 32 cities/towns selected in the State to implement various schemes under AMRUT 2015-16.
Financial contribution for implementing the ₹193.46-lakh green park scheme is Central Government ₹96.73 lakh (50%), State Government ₹38.69 lakh (20%) and the Corporation ₹58.04 lakh (30%).
Administrative sanction was obtained and work order was issued to two contractors on August 1, 2016.
Work is in progress at Ashok Nagar (ward 3) in Suramangalam Zone at ₹ 35.60 lakh, Sona Nagar (ward 5) in Hasthampatti Zone at ₹ 41.60 lakh, S.K. Township (ward 9) area in Ammapet zone at ₹ 51.26 lakh and at Kanchi Nagar (ward 60) in Kondalampatti Zone at ₹ 65 lakh.
The parks will have children play area with play equipment, walking area, lawns, trees and adequate space for visitors.
Except planting greeneries, all the works were completed, said the engineers.
Officials said that this was the first green space created under the AMRUT scheme and added that the parks would be opened in two weeks.
Under the AMRUT 2016-17, the Corporation has proposed to create seven more green spaces in the city at a total cost of ₹ 2.64 crore.
The places are Dharma Nagar (ward 19), Abirami Garden (ward 25), Prakasam Nagar (ward 6), Kambar Street (ward 8), Ayyasamy Park (ward 40), Gandhi Nagar (ward 50) and Abirami Garden (ward 50).
