The police have arrested two women for forcing minors to seek alms.

The arrested have been identified as Suganya (21) and Mariammal (30), both from Coimbatore. The police said that Suganya was found seeking alms with her one-year-old daughter in front of Ranis Theatre near railway station and Mariammal was found seeking alms with her two daughters aged nine and two at Muthukumar Nagar near Rathinapuri. The women were arrested under Section 76 of Juvenile Justice Act.

On Friday, the police had rescued 91 children of which 84 were involved in child labour with the knowledge of parents. While five minors were rescued from alms seeking, two saved by police were orphans.

The rescued children are currently sheltered at a Government approved home for children. Officials said that district Child Welfare Committee will complete the formalities for rehabilitating the rescued children in the coming days.
