A 30-year-old man of Avarampalayam, near Peelamedu, in the city consumed poison after allegedly beating his wife to death using a hammer, during the early hours of Wednesday. The police said that theirs was a love marriage and that she was pregnant for five months.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that the accused M. Naveen Prasad (30), a diploma in mechanical engineering, owned a workshop. The police said that he lived in Avarampalayam and fell in love with the victim Mariammal alias Sindhu Priya (24), his neighbour.

They got married on March 23, 2014, and lived in the same area. The police said that Naveen used to get drunk and pick a quarrel with his wife.

Last week, she had a fight with her husband and went to her parent’s place and returned home on Tuesday.

Inquiries revealed that the couple fought in the same night. In the early hours of Wednesday, the milkman found her lying dead in a pool of blood on the road near their house and informed the police. The body was taken to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post-mortem.
