City police will go on a massive programme to sensitise people on the need to reduce cyber crimes, and sexual harassment and make them comply traffic rules, according to City Police Commissioner S.N. Seshasai.

“As part of the initiatives, the youth will be trained by the police through an array of awareness programmes on leading quality life. This include explaining them the general behaviour in public places and how technology should be properly used to prevent cyber crimes,” he told reporters after assuming charge as City Police Commissioner here on Monday.

Motor vehicle users would be guided on the importance of lane discipline, avoiding alcohol, and respecting other vehicles coming from the opposite direction.

“The traffic management is going to be a challenging task considering that the vehicle population in the city is going up significantly even though the width of the roads more or less remain the same. We will evolve strategies to improve the infrastructure, apart from educating the motorists, to ease the traffic congestion,” the Commissioner said.

Talking on other priorities for the city police in the coming months, he said that high incidences of two-wheeler thefts and chain snatching were matters of concern and steps would be taken to increase patrolling.

Mr. Seshasai hinted that steps would be taken to relocate the liquor shops situated alongside the State Highways passing through the city limits.

Mr. Seshasai, a 1995 batch Indian Police Service officer, joined the state police service as Deputy Superintendent of Police in 1987.

He is the first Inspector General of Police to be posted as Tirupur City Police Commissioner. Earlier police commissioners were in the rank of DIG.

Prior to the present posting, Mr. Seshasai had served in the Central Bureau of Investigation, the Chennai City police, and as IG (Elections).
