The Coimbatore Corporation proposal of January 2013 to have the Nallampalayam Road widened, it appears, has not gone forward at the desired pace. According to sources, the file related to expansion of the road measuring 5.20km has been doing the rounds within the Corporation since then.

The Corporation’s proposal was for widening from 30ft to 80ft the road that connects Mettupalayam Road with Sathyamangalam Road by acquiring 1.84 lakh sq ft. The Corporation had worked out that the land acquisition cost alone would work out to Rs. 16.65 crore at the guideline value. And the road development work would take another Rs. 3 crore.

The entire project cost was estimated nearly at Rs. 20 crore.

Sources in the Corporation said that the proposal said that road widening work would be taken up in three stages, depending upon the width. At some places the road would measure 50ft, at a few other places 60ft and at others, 80ft.

After passing the resolution, the Corporation had asked the surveyor in the North Zone to survey the area to identify where the expansion would take place — north or south of the existing road, and the extent of land to be acquired from each land owner.

The Town Planning Office in the Corporation received the file back from the surveyor with a few queries in May. And it sent back the file after answering the queries in June.

The sources said that unless the surveyor completed the work, the Corporation would not be in a position to send the file to the Local Planning Authority Chairman M. Karunagaran for further action.

District Development Council Member ‘Venthamarai’ Balu said that the Corporation and the LPA ought to expedite the road widening work because as and when the road was widened, it would help decongest Gandhipuram, 100 Feet Road, Ganapathy, and other areas.

Vehicles proceeding between Mettupalayam Road and Sathyamangalam Road could take the widened Nallampalayam Road. And those proceeding eastward beyond Sathyamangalam Road could use the road to proceed to Kalapatti Road.

He said that he had asked the district administration to clear the Corporation’s proposal at the earliest and also sanction LPA’s funds for land acquisition.

The Corporation sources said that they were awaiting clearance on their proposal for issuing transfer of development rights certificates to owners of whose lands they acquired as this would ease the land acquisition process.
