The National Highways authorities have begun the widening and relaying of Tiruchi road from Bypass road junction to Coimbatore Stock Exchange.
After the formation of the bypass road from Neelambur to Madukkarai, the NH-67 stretch was remaining battered for years.
Neither the State Highways nor the National Highways authorities could take up the road renewal works. National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) was asked to take up only new roads and bypass road projects.
After repeated representations, the Union Surface Transport Ministry provided funds for the works. Then the impasse prevailed over who will be the executing agency and take up the works.
The National Highways has now commenced the work of widening the 7-km stretch into a four-lane road.
The work would involve construction of bridges and a median. The width of the road will be 18.70 m.
Preliminary works for removing Electricity Board poles and transformers has just begun and authorities plan to cut down trees. Four saplings will be planted for every tree cut down.
The work is being taken up at an outlay of Rs. 15 crore. The authorities plan to complete the same within six months. There is a growing demand to widen the stretch from Stock Exchange building to Lanka Corner.
