The high standards set by the Indian armed forces should be maintained at all cost, said the Commandant, Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) Lt. General S.K. Gadeok at the War Memorial in Wellington near here on Tuesday.

Leading a wreath laying ceremony which formed part of the Vijay Diwas celebrations organised to commemorate India’s resounding victory over Pakistan in the 1971 war, he observed that the Indian army now occupies an enviable position because of the efforts put in to surmount various odds.

Adverting to the surrender of about 93,000 Pakistani soldiers in the 1971 war, he said that this achievement of India was unparalleled. He underscored the need to safeguard the reputation of the Indian army.

The Commandant, Madras Regimental Centre (MRC), Brigadier S. Suresh Kumar said “we remember with respect the supreme sacrifice made by the Indian Armed Forces to defeat Pakistan.”

All sections of the army should rededicate themselves to the service of the nation and uphold the highest traditions of the armed forces while discharging their responsibilities.

Pointing out that the names of the martyrs have been etched on the war memorial, he said, “We salute them.”

Among those who laid wreaths was Lt.General (retd) S.K.Pattabhiraman who had participated in the 1971 war.
