A large number of people from Kumkumampalayam village petitioned District Collector G. Govindaraj on Monday regarding shortage in the supply of drinking water.
P. Vasanth, a resident of the village who works as a tailor, said that almost 500 families in the hamlet were struggling to meet the water requirements as the supply had been lethargic for the last few months.
“With borewells too going dry, we have been obtaining the water from nearby areas. With most of the people being daily wage workers, water cannot be purchased at high costs through lorries,” he said.
The Collector promised to look into the matter.
Another group of people from near Kangayam came with bottles containing contaminated water, reportedly drawn from wells.
Their claim was that particles coming out of some charcoal making units in the area had been polluting the water in the wells.
