Water leaking from a faulty valve in the Pilloor water supply pipeline at Veerapandipirivu, near Coimbatore, on Saturday.

At a time when the State has been facing drought and people are waiting in mile-long queues with pots, water leaks from a valve in the Pilloor main pipeline in Veerapandipirivu, near here.

The water has been flowing for quite sometime - two months to be precise, says L.N. Ranganathan, who runs a factory in the area. The water leaks after the operator turns the valve and continues flowing onto the road for over 12 hours.

And, this has been a regular phenomenon.

He alleges that he got in touch with Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board officials to report the leakage but their response was rather disappointing.

Sources in the Board say that the air valve in Veerapandipirivu has developed a leak and that a development is in the past few days and not months as the resident alleges. Engineers in charge of maintaining the water supply scheme will take up the valve replacement work soon, as part of regular maintenance work.

The sources say that the Board is also attending to leaks in the Kavundampalayam-Vadavalli scheme. Two pipelines have developed leaks due to development works in the vicinity. The engineers are attending to the work and it will be completed soon.
