Residents of Guruvayoorappan Nagar in the city staged a sit-in protest on Collectorate premises before submitting a memorandum to the Collector highlighting the difficulties faced them due to drinking water shortage for the past few months.
According to them, the dwellers in the area were provided with lorry water once in a gap of about five days which too was coming in restricted quantities.
Even as people from different areas face difficulty in getting adequate amount of water to meet their consumption needs, there were many instances where the leaks in the water pipelines either got corrected only after many weeks or still need to be attended.
One such leak in the water pipeline along T.T.P. Mill Road in the city had not been attended for long despite the people in the area brought the issue to the notice of the Corporation officials.
C. Hari, a resident of the area and an employee of a shipping company, told The Hindu that since officials did not take any action despite the defect was first noticed more than a month back, the people in the area recently had to put some mud lining over the leak to minimise the water wastage.
“The leaked water is stagnating in the area and becoming a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes,” he said.
