Vital organs were retrieved from a person who was declared brain dead at a city hospital. S. Mohan Doss (45), an operator at a private company here, suffered severe headache and vomiting on Wednesday after which he collapsed unconscious. He was admitted to G. Kuppuswamy Naidu Memorial Hospital (GKNMH) on Thursday. He had a history of hypertension.

A CT scan revealed extensive bleed and increased pressure in the brain after which he was operated to relieve the pressure by insertion of a plastic tube in the ventricle part of the brain.

He was brought back to intensive care unit in a critical state. He did not improve and he was reviewed by an ICU team and other doctors who confirmed that he was ‘brain dead.’ The family was counselled for brain stem death after which they agreed to donate his organs. The organ retrieval process began at 2 a.m. on Saturday.

The liver and both the kidneys were donated to patients at Kovai Medical Center and Hospital (KMCH) and corneas were donated to Aravind Eye Hospital here.
