Amid high-level vigil, the majority of the Ganesh idols installed in the district were immersed in the district on Monday.
As many as 488 idols out of the 785 ones installed in the district during this year's Vinayaka Chaturthi celebration, were taken out in procession on Monday before they were immersed at different designated locations.
Security
The district police deployed a total of 1,032 personnel for the bandobust duties on the day.
This included two additional super-intendents of police, 11 deputy super- intendents of police, 31 inspectors, 124 sub-inspectors, 684 constables and 180 men from Armed Reserve and Tamil Nadu Special Police battalions.
The policemen in ‘mufti' were posted in sensitive areas through which the processions passed to keep a watch on strangers' movement.
The beefed-up security was owing to some clashes witnessed during the Chaturthi celebrations in the city last year.
Supervision
Inspector General of Police (West Zone) P. Sivanandi, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore range) Bala Naga Devi and Superintendent of Police A. Arun directly supervised the security arrangements.
The immersion of the idols was carried out in the PAP canal at Andipalayam, Amaravathi River at Dharapuram, PAP canal at Pongalur, Vanjamadai Vaikal at Udumalpet and at Elgampalayam.
Police sources said that the immersion of idols would conclude in the district on Tuesday.
