Verdict in ‘Gym’ Hakkim rape case on September 23

A college student was abducted and raped in 2008 by A.M. Abdul Hakkim alias ‘Gym’ Hakkim of Kuniamuthur.

The verdict in the case of abduction and rape of a woman student of a college in 2008, a case in which the prime accused is A.M. Abdul Hakkim alias ‘Gym’ Hakkim of Kuniamuthur, is likely to be pronounced in a court here on September 23.

After hearing the final arguments on Tuesday, Mahila Court Judge M.P. Subramanian instructed both the senior defence lawyer C. Gnanabharathi and Special Public Prosecutor R. Sarojini to make all their written and oral submissions before September 11.

Four of the seven persons accused in the case were produced in the court.

They included ‘Gym’ Hakkim, currently lodged in the Central Prison at Salem under the Goondas Act, along with George Kingsley, Mohammed Anees, Karthik alias Karthikeyan, and Miga Prakash.

These four have currently been enlarged on bail.

Of the remaining two, Anandaraj was absconding and one accused Mani alias Manikandan was found dead at his home. Police suspect that he committed suicide.

According to the prosecution, ‘Gym’ Hakkim and his accomplices allegedly abducted the girl from near Race Course on November 21, 2008 and took her to a dilapidated house near Sulur where ‘Gym’ Hakkim had raped her.

The police rescued the girl during the early hours of the next day and arrested them.

The Sections invoked against ‘Gym’ Hakkim, who alone was charged with rape, and his accomplices include 376 (rape) read with 120(b) (criminal conspiracy), 320 (grievous hurt), 323. (voluntarily causing hurt), 147 (rioting), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), 366. (kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage), 343 (wrongful confinement for three or more days), 392 (robbery) read with 397 (robbery, or dacoity, with attempt to cause death), 354. (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 506 (ii)(threat to cause death) and 170 (personating a public servant) of Indian Penal Code.
