Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) leader Thol Thirumavalavan on Friday hailed the Pinarayi Vijayan-led Kerala government’s decision to appoint those belonging to oppressed communities as temple priests and introduce reservation for inter-caste couples as a revolutionary action in the social history of the country.
Even as other governments and parties were discussing and debating such proposals, Kerala had gone one step further in translating them into reality, he said. Stating that Tamil Nadu was a pioneer in social justice, he urged the State government to follow Kerala’s example and appoint the 206 non-Brahmins, who had completed their training as archakas , to temples in Tamil Nadu.
Speaking to mediapersons at the Coimbatore airport, Mr. Thirumavalavan lamented the lives claimed by the dengue outbreak in the State.
Stating that the visit of the Central team to Tamil Nadu to take stock of the dengue situation shouldn’t turn into a mere eyewash, he urged the State government to take measures on a war footing to eradicate the disease.
Urging the State to come out with a white paper on dengue, he said that the Centre had failed in its duty.
Hits out at BJP
Reacting to the remarks of some BJP leaders on the Taj Mahal, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that the BJP was trying to destroy unity among various sections of the people and was engaging in communal politics.
Demanding action against the officials responsible for the roof collapse of the TNSTC depot at Porayar in Nagapattinam district, he sought a compensation of ₹25 lakh for the families of those who had lost their lives in the mishap. He also reiterated the need to subject all public buildings to a stability check.
On the car journey of the ailing DMK leader, M. Karunanidhi, from Gopalapuram to Kodambakkam in Chennai, Mr. Thirumavalavan said that it only spoke volumes about the ‘will power’ of the Dravidian leader, adding that he was happy that Mr. Karunanidhi’s health condition had improved.
