In Selvam Nagar, Vadavalli, the main road is as bad as it could get. Every time a vehicle passes, the dust that gets kicked up, spreads all over the place, invades homes, and finally settles on sofa sets, television and on floors.
This has troubled the residents there as they have been putting up with it for over two months. At times, it becomes difficult to even breathe, says K.V. Mohan, a resident.
The trouble started soon after the Coimbatore Corporation began digging up the road. After picking the surface, the Corporation dumped blue metal, levelled it and again spread blue metal but this time instead of topping it with bitumen, spread quarry dust and left it at that.
Now with the movement of vehicles, the dust is off the surface and the stones too are not in place, he adds.
Super Garden Avenue resident C. Seshadri had a similar complaint to make about the New Thillai Nagar Road. While trying to negotiate the loose stones, he fell off his motorcycle and hurt himself.
Residents there find it difficult to even walk, complains M. Ravi, another resident.
They say that the Corporation that has taken up the work should complete it at the earliest as the incomplete work is troubling them to no end. In fact, the residents were better off with the old roads.
Ward Councillor Kumutham Kuppusamy says that she has been trying her best to get the work restarted and is in talks with the officials.
Sources in the civic body say that the contractor who had taken up the work was unable to proceed because of payment issues. Now that the Corporation has managed to solve the problem, the works will be resumed in the next few days.
The Corporation is re-laying around five roads, including lanes, at around Rs. 1 crore in these areas, the sources added.
