The Coimbatore Corporation is in the process of finalising the proposal for the construction of a bus terminus in Vadavalli. The proposal got a thrust with the recent visit of Mayor S.M. Velusamy, Member of Legislative Assembly T. Malaravan and a few Corporation officials to the site.
According to Corporation Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy, the Mayor visited the site to offer his suggestions on the construction of the terminus and also listened to the residents’ grievances.
The bus terminus is to come up on a 46 cent plot, a little away from the present terminus, opposite the farmers’ market on the Kavundampalayam Road. It is an irregular plot, measuring 300 feet in length, 100 feet in width on the southern side and 40 feet in width on the northern side.
Mr. Ponnusamy says that the Corporation decided to take up the project as the present place that serves as the terminus is too small to hold buses and mini buses that are parked there. The problem becomes acute during peak hours.
The new terminus will be able to accommodate more than four buses at a time, have ample space for parking bicycles and two-wheelers at separate enclosures, will offer shelter for commuters and also a waiting room in addition to shops. Besides this, there will be public convenience facilities as well.
The Commissioner says that the Corporation has proposed to construct the terminus at Rs. 2.50 crore with funds from the State Government’s Housing Department under the Infrastructure and Amenities scheme.
He says that the Housing Secretary and the Directorate of Town and Country Planning have, in principle, agreed to the Corporation’s proposal. The civic body will have to send an estimate for the officials to officially sanction the project.
The Corporation took over the project from the Vadavalli Town Panchayat after merger. The then Town Panchayat had written to the district administration and obtained the land.
