Use plates, cups made of areca leaves in Amma Unavagams: farmers

The government should come forward to use plates, cups made of areca leaves in Amma Unavagams across the State, said Su. Palanisamy, president of the Tamilnadu Vivasayigal Sangam (non-party based), here on Monday.

Submitting a petition to the District Collector, the Sangam urged to make it mandatory usage of plates, cups made of areca leaves as well as banana leaves in all the Amma Unavagams, as it would help farmers as well as prevent degradation of environment.

Use of plastic plates and cups by hotels and eateries should be banned following the neighbouring Kerala and the Bengaluru Corporation, he said.

DYFI plea

Cadres of Democratic Youth Federation of India has urged the district administration to restrict Tasmac shops functioning on 24/7 basis in Ward Nos. 44 and 45 in Coimbatore city.

In a petition submitted to the Collector, the Coimbatore North City Committee alleged that there are four Tasmac shops functioning in Ward No. 44 in the place where there is only one library. They also urged the administration to construct storm water drains from Thoppampatti Pirivu to Thannasi Kovil bridge to avoid flooding during rainy season.

Job sought

S. Soundari (32), wife of the 41-year old TNSTC bus conductor Sivakumar who died in the Somanur bus stand roof collapse in September, has sought government job. Studied up to standard VI, she submitted a petition to the District Collector seeking government job on compassionate ground. She came to the Collectorate along with her three-month-old male baby and her mother-in-law.

Wage arrears

Cleaning guards (Thoomai Kavalargal) appointed to remove garbage in Asokapuram Panchayat in Sulur Block urged the administration to settle wage arrears for the last five months.

B. Selvi, one of the cleaning guards, said that they were given wages for 100 days under the MGNREGS and after that they were not paid wages. A total of 13 cleaning guards were appointed by the panchayat, she said.

SHG members duped

Members of women SHG Samathuvam Trust in GM Nagar in South Ukkadam alleged that a man posing as real estate consultant duped them to the tune of Rs. 32.86 lakh by promising to give land. A petition was submitted to the Collector by the members headed by its president S. Lakshmi.

AAP petition

Members of Aam Aadmi Party submitted a petition to the Collector to protect Valankulam from dumping of construction waste and garbage. S. Akbar, District Convenor, submitted the petition.

Health hazard

Residents of Muniappan Koil Street in Perur Chettipalayam lodged a complaint with the District Collector that an open drainage was posing severe health hazard. Residents were facing untold sufferings, including bad smell emanating from the chocking drainage, due to the unmindful dumping of plastic waste.

Several complaints of the residents have gone in vain. Moreover, even after several months the new drainage channels were not constructed after dismantling the old ones.

P. Krishnasamy, on behalf of the residents, submitted a petition appealing to redress the grievances on a war-footing.
