A total of 248 trade unions members were removed from the office of Tamil Nadu Construction and Unorganised Workers Welfare Board here on Tuesday.
The workers were demanding that the functioning of the board must be strengthened besides expeditious disbursal of relief amounts for marriage, maternity and accident compensation.
They also demanded the scrapping of the rule that mandated the worker to produce certificates from the Village Administrative Officer.
Tirupur In Tirupur, around 270 trade unionists and unorganised sector workers were arrested when they laid siege to the office of Labour Officer (Social Security Scheme).
The main demand of the trade unionists and workers was that the new practice adopted by the Labour Department which force the workers to appear in person to file the applications for enrolling as members of various welfare boards set up for them and for renewing the membership, should be reconsidered.
Besides these, the agitators demanded that pension should not be withheld to those workers who failed to renew the membership ‘twice’ between the age of 55 and 60 years.
Inspector of Labour U. Ramaraj clarified that it was by the government order the workers were asked to be present in person to file the applications for enrolment and other related aspects, and the said rule was followed uniformly in all districts. On pension issue, he said that the rule which makes mandatory renewal of membership on two occasions between the age of 55 and 60 years, had ceased to exist.
Udhagamandalam A demonstration was also staged at Udhamandalam opposite the labour office. V.V. Giri, president, CITU, The Nilgiris, led the demonstration.
