An orientation programme for students of Bharathiar University and its affiliated colleges who will be involved as volunteers in the World Classical Tamil Conference will be held at the university on May 13.
Six committees have been formed with student and teacher volunteers. The committees are as follows: reception, accommodation, guest care, food, conference, and health care and procession, Vice-Chancellor of the university C. Swaminathan told The Hindu .
The student volunteers would assist those who are part of the main committees formed by the government.
“Over 3,000 students have registered for the purpose and 1,200 have been shortlisted to act as volunteers. Likewise, 130 teachers have also been chosen to lead the students in the activities they will be involved with respect to their committees,” Co-ordinator R. Venkatapathy, said.
The food committee would have the maximum number of volunteers to the tune of 600. The rest of the committees would have a maximum of 150 students.
Explaining the itinerary of the orientation, Mr. Venkatapathy said: “The students will be allotted committees. Officials from the office of the World Classical Tamil Conference in Coimbatore will photograph the students and with the address proof make identity cards during the orientation.” Officer on Special Duty for the Tamil Conference S. Prabhakaran would conduct the orientation for the students in the morning. They would be told the theme and purpose of the conference, the delegates' profile, and the work involved on the whole. Orientation regarding their contribution with regard to the specific duties of the respective committees would also be explained.
A separate orientation for NSS Programme Officers would be held in the afternoon. This would be conducted by City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu.
The orientation would focus on the traffic and safety regulations that would involve the movement of participants for the four days and most importantly the procession of the floats that would be held on day one of the conference. The Programme Officers would in turn orient the 5,000 volunteers who would be involved in the crowd regulation work.
The main focus would be on the route of the procession that would begin at V.O.C. Park and terminate at the conference venue. The orientation programme would be inaugurated by District Collector P. Umanath. Mr. Swaminathan would preside. Students have been asked to report at the Dr. Usha Kirtilal Mehta Convention Centre for the morning session that would begin at 10 a.m.
