Officials say they will attend to the works at the earliest

Residents of Radhika Avenue, Thiagi Kumaran Street, Chinnasamy Nagar, Veerasamy Colony, Mullai Nagar, Sree Nagar and neighbouring areas know what the Corporation is doing and also what it is not doing.

They know from the dug roads and scattered earth that the Corporation had taken up storm water drain and underground drainage work in their area. They also know from the unfinished work that the Corporation had left the task unfinished and that nobody had turned up to complete the work and restore the roads.

At Radhika Avenue the Corporation has constructed storm water drains in patches. Councillor R. Kalyanasundaram says the civic body has not completed the work at junctions. “I don't understand the logic behind constructing drains alongside roads and leaving the junctions unattended,” he rues.

At the junctions, the Corporation has removed the earth, though.

At those junctions, the water has stagnated and that breeds mosquitoes, the residents complain. “The work the Corporation has taken up has brought us more trouble than relief,” complaints P. Thiagarajan, a resident.

Chinnasamy Nagar residents' plight is worse. The dug earth and waste concrete mixture still lie on the roads, troubling their movement. Mr. Kalayanasundaram says the earth and waste have remained there for over two months now.

At Mullai Nagar the story is different. Siruvani water continues to go waste from the damage caused to pipeline during the execution of underground drainage work.

Pointing to the long trench-like pit and the stagnant water there, he says it has been left unattended for around a month now.

Next to that, at Sree Nagar, too the drinking water leaks from a damaged pipeline.

Mr. Kalyanasundaram says the Corporation has cared not to plug even the leaks. “Complaining about water shortage and failing to plug the leak are not acceptable.”

Sources in the engineering wing that oversees the implementation of the storm water drain and underground drainage works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme say that he will attend to the works at the earliest.
