The roads in Erode town witnessed an improvement on Saturday with the Corporation along with the police personnel pulling down a number of unauthorised hoardings that obstructed visibility or posed a hazard.
A team of officials from the Corporation along with the police personnel removed vinyl boards, hoardings, banners and various other advertising materials which were put up on the roadside in different parts of the town.
The action was initiated following widespread complaints from the public that the advertisers, despite repeated warnings from the authorities, continued to erect hoardings without obtaining permission.
Some of them had been erected on the land belonging to the Corporation and State Highways Department.
Such huge hoardings dot almost all the main roads and streets in the town.
Busy arterial roads including Perundurai main road, EVN Road, Mettur Road, Sathyamangalam Road and Chennimalai Road have hundreds of such hoardings on both sides. The Corporation authorities, despite repeated representations from the people, remained silent on this issue for long.
“We are happy that the civic authorities woke up from their slumber and pulled down the hoardings,” vehicle users said. Residents urged the Corporation and the police to initiate sustained efforts to remove all such hoardings, which were causing inconvenience to pedestrians and distracting the attention of vehicle drivers.
The revenue authorities and civic officials should come up with an effective monitoring mechanism on this issue.
“Otherwise the advertisers will continue to erect more hoardings,” they said
