Unaccounted cash to the tune of Rs. 60 lakh was seized by the Railway Police at the Coimbatore Railway Junction on Saturday. Two persons were detained in this connection.
S. Senthil, Deputy Superintendent of Railway Police, told reporters that Railway Protection Force personnel found two persons moving in a suspicious manner. Following this, the security personnel examined their bags through the luggage scanner. The scan revealed the bags to be filled with wads of Rs. 1,000, Rs. 500, and Rs. 100 currency notes.
The security personnel handed them over to the Railway Police.
Mr. Senthil said that the two identified as V. Senthil Kumar (25) and G. Raja (58), both from Coimbatore, were employees of a jewellery firm on Karuppa Gounder Street. Their employer Raam had given them the cash and asked them to deposit it with the firm’s branch at Nagercoil.
They had planned to take the Hyderabad - Trivandrum Sabari Express to Thrissur and take a bus to Nagercoil from there.
However, as the two did not have any documentation to account for the source of the cash, the Railway Police informed the Income Tax Department and seized the cash.
