Held for theft

Pollachi East police on Friday arrested Viji, 22, of Mannur Kalaignar Nagar on charges of conning and stealing eight-and-a-half sovereign jewellery from a woman by promising to marry her.

The police said that K. Meena, 23, of Papanasam, Thanjavur, fell in love with Viji, whom she had known only through phone conversations. Their friendship-turned-love started after Viji dialled her number by mistake a couple of months ago.

After Viji promised to marry her, Meena left home with the jewellery as he had told her that his parents would not accept her without the jewellery. She reached Gandhipuram, met Viji and the two left for Pollachi. On the way, the two went to a restaurant. There in the guise of making a call, Viji came out of the hotel with Meena’s bag containing the jewellery and fled the scene in a motorcycle.

Meena, who realised that she had been duped, contacted a relative of hers in Sundarapuram. The police said that the relatives rescued the girl and with their help she hlodged a complaint. Based on the complaint, the police traced Viji, arrested and recovered the jewellery.
