The police have arrested S. Kaliyamoorthy (40), a native of Pudukkottai, and S. Ajish Sherif (32) from Kuniyamuthur on the charge of extorting money from a former bank officer, posing as police officers.
According to V. Ragavendran (69), three persons approached him while he was waiting for bus at the Gandhipuran Town Bus Stand on June 22 stating that there was a complaint of harassing women against him. They asked him to come to the Race Course Police Station. They asked him to pay Rs. 2,000 for not registering a case against him. He paid the money.
Later, they used to call on his mobile phone and continued to ask for more money.
Fed up, he informed the Race Course Police Station.
As asked by Mr. Ragavendran, Kaliyamoorthy, and Ajish Sherif came to Race Course to collect more money from him. The police arrested them registered a case against them under section 170 (personating a public servant), 387 (putting person in fear of death or of grievous hurt in order to commit extortion) and 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. The police are on the look out for their accomplice Ravi.
