An autorickshaw driver and his friend were hacked to death in broad daylight in Selvapuram on Friday.

Four persons have reportedly surrendered before the police.

According to sources, a gang of four on two-wheelers had followed T. Anandan (30), and his friend S. Selvaraj (37), who were in the autorickshaw.

They stopped the vehicle near the Selva Chinthamani Tank and attacked them using bill hooks.

They first attacked Selvaraj, and when Anandan tried to intervene, they turned towards Anandan as well. To escape from the assault, Anandan attempted to drive away the vehicle but could not.

He hit the compound wall of the nearby sanitation complex that belonged to the Coimbatore Corporation.

They ran away from the place. In the impact of the attack, Anandan instantaneously.

People in the vicinity took Selvaraj to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital but the doctors said that he was dead.

The police said that it was a case of gang rivalry. Selvaraj was an accused of hacking G. Vinod Kumar, a realtor, to death on June 2. After coming out on bail,

Selvaraj along with Anandan were threatening Vinod Kumar’s accomplices and they fearing for their life had attacked both.

A few hours after the incident, C. Surya, Babu, Surya, and Mohanraj surrendered before the police. But the police did not confirm the surrender.

The incident led to tense moments for sometime in Selvapuram and other parts of the city as it took place on the first death anniversary of Hindu Munnani spokesperson C. Sasikumar.
