Two detained under Goondas Act

Collector M. Karunagaran has ordered the detention of Janardhanan, 40, and Govindasamy, 31, under the Goondas Act. According to the sources, the Pollachi East police had arrested Janardhanan on the charge of smuggling sand. The Anamalai police had arrested Govindasamy on similar charges. Based on recommendation from the Coimbatore Rural Police, the Collector ordered their detention.

Man commits suicide

Auto rickshaw driver Nagaraj, 39, of Sundarapuram Madukkarai Road committed suicide at his residence on Tuesday. The Podanur police said that he resorted to the extreme step by hanging himself after his wife objected to his having an illicit relationship. Based on a complaint from his wife, the police registered a case and sent his body to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital for post mortem.

Actor found dead

Actor R. Suresh, 44, who had acted in a few Tamil films and television serials was found hanging at his residence in Peelamedu. According to the Peelamedu police, residents of the area called them up saying that foul odour emanated from his residence. When the police went there, they found the body hanging and in a decomposed state.

Boy rescued

Coimbatore Railway Police on Wednesday rescued a boy who was found on Platform 4 at the Coimbatore Junction. Police enquiries revealed that the boy, P. Selvakumar (13), hailed from Sivakasi. He was working in Chennai and had fled from there as he was unable to withstand his employer’s torture.

Jeweller robbed

Unidentified persons gained entry into jeweller Prabhu’s house in Venkatesan Colony, Pollachi, on Tuesday night and decamped with jewellery weighing 17 sovereigns. According to the police, the accused had short fused the power connection to house and robbed the residents of the valuables. The incident came to light only on Wednesday morning.

Youths duped

R.S. Puram resident Dinesh, 27, and his friend Vivek were duped of Rs. 5.40 lakh, the money they gave to their friend Mathew and his friends after they promised employment in Gulf countries. The youth had lodged a complaint with the R.S. Puram police, who have registered a case in this connection.

Killed in accident

B. Sasikumar, 27, of Mudalipalayam was killed in a road accident near his residence on Wednesday morning. According to the Sulur police, the incident involving a private bus and Sasikumar’s motorcycle took place when he was on his way to invite his friends for his wedding, scheduled on July 14. The bus was on its way to Coimbatore from Tirupur. Residents of the area rushed Sasikumar to the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital but he died on the way. Angered by the loss of life, the residents of the area staged a protest in front of the bus.

The bus driver, however, fled from the spot.
