Two bank employees held for stealing cash

The Podanur police on Thursday arrested two bank employees - an officer and a sub-staff - on the charge of stealing Rs. 10 lakh that was part of a bundle which was used to refill automated teller machines.

According to the police, following a complaint from bank manager Karthik, the police registered a case and went to the bank’s SIDCO branch for investigation.

Mr. Karthik had told the police that a few bank staff in-charge of handling cash that was to be given to the contractor for refilling ATMs had reported that Rs. 10 lakh was missing from the Rs. 6.50 crore given to them.

The police inquired with the bank officials and arrested sub-staff Anandi (33) of Selvapuram, who confessed to the crime. Based on her statement, the police also arrested cash officer Baskaran (52). The police said that Anandi told them that it was at the instance of Baskaran that she took the cash on Wednesday. Baskaran took away Rs. 5 lakh with him and gave her the remaining amount, which she had kept at her home. The police said they recovered the Rs. 5 lakh that Baskaran had taken, and the remaining Rs. 5 lakh from Anandi’s house.

The police had booked the two under Section 380 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code.

Attack on HM leader’s house

Unidentified persons flung two kerosene-filled bottles at Hindu Munnani leader Muthusamy’s house in Sirumugai on Wednesday.

Mr. Muthusamy, who was recently removed from Sirumugai union secretary’s post, told the police that new union secretary Prem could be behind the incident as the latter had asked him to withdraw a complaint he had preferred against Prem and a few friends for assaulting him. The police are investigating.

House burgled

Unidentified persons gained entry into Sadiq’s house on Pilliar Koil Street in Mettupalayam and decamped with electrical and electronic equipment. The police said that the incident happened when Mr. Sadiq and family were away. The burglars had broken open the door to gain entry.

Arrested

The R.S. Puram police on Wednesday arrested M. Rajasekar (22) of Ganapthy on the charge of selling pirated prints of latest films. The police said that they arrested him near the Sundaram Street-T.K. Street Junction and seized 25 discs from him.
