The Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage (TWAD) Board Workers Union has opposed appointing contract workers for permanent posts.
A group of union members submitted a petition to the district administration during the public grievance meeting held at the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday.
According to the Union general secretary M. Athmanathan, orders have been issued to post contract workers for the maintenance of the Suleswaranpatti Combined Drinking Water Scheme, which supplied water to 64 villages in the region for over two decades.
The 37 permanent workers who have been maintaining it for all these years were likely to be relocated to places at least 100 km away from the present location, which will cause hardship to their families and affect their children’s education, he contended.
Conservancy workers
A group of 12 conservancy workers from Vettaikaranpudur Town Panchayat, engaged by the local body as daily wage labourers for the past six years, have appealed to the district administration to ensure seniority in the employment exchange was followed during regularisation of workers.
In their petition submitted during the public grievance meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, the workers alleged that three daily wage labourers were regularised recently overlooking those senior to them.
Further, the workers said that when they raised this issue with the officials, the local body stopped engaging them for work. They appealed to the district administration to restore their jobs since many of them were poor and had to support their family.
Sanitary complex
Residents of Ettimadai have appealed to the district administration to construct toilets and other sanitary facilities for ladies in the area.
In their petition submitted by Thamizhar Viduthalai Iyakkam on behalf Ettimadai residents during the public grievance meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, S. Dilipan, a resident of Ettimadai, said that over 300 families were residing in the area without adequate sanitary facilities. Several petitions to the Ettimadai Town Panchayat have provided futile, they added.
Land compensation
A group of land owners from whom land was acquired for the construction of a flyover from Kurichi to Nachipalayam Road have appealed to the district administration to expedite the disbursal of compensation. In their petition submitted during the public grievance meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, S.N. Swaminathan, one of the land owners, said that they were asked to come for a meeting in June 2012.
However, the amount provided was “too low” and the land owners appealed for rates on par with the guideline value of their land. The issue had been kept pending since then, he added.
RTE Act
The Dalit Viduthalai Katchi has appealed to the district administration to ensure schools followed the norms of RTE Act and implemented the 25 per cent quota reserved for children from weaker sections.
