Lorry owners, who are not operating trucks to Kerala since April 1 demanding better facilities and speedy clearance at the check-post at Walayar, called off the strike on Monday night following talks with the Kerala Chief Minister in Thiruvananthapuram.
G. R. Shanmugappa, chairman of the toll committee of the All India Motor Transport Congress, told The Hindu over phone that Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Finance Minister K.M. Mani participated in the talks and assured the lorry owners that officials would be posted at 14 counters at Walayar (the lorry owners had been demanding opening of more counters as only three were operational now) and the truckers would be able to use the Government weigh bridge at the check-post.
The Government would open central excise counters, install closed circuit television camera and create a green channel for speedy clearance.
The Government would spend Rs. 12 lakh to provide drinking water supply at the check-post, and create parking space for about 300 vehicles at an investment of Rs. 2 crore.
A committee, including officials and lorry owners, would be constituted and it would meet once in three months to address the grievances of the truckers.
Since all the major demands were met by the Government, it was decided to call off the strike, he said.
