The head works of the Coimbatore Corporation's Dedicated Pilloor Water Supply Scheme is nearing completion.

The Coimbatore Corporation has delivered the much-expected news on the water supply front: that the Pilloor dedicated drinking water supply scheme will be up and running from December.

According to the Coimbatore Corporation Commissioner T.K. Ponnusamy, the Corporation officials will start the trial run by the last week of November and slowly start the full fledged water supply.

The Corporation is executing the Rs. 150 crore Pilloor scheme, also called the Pilloor II scheme, with funds from the Union and State Governments under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme.

Mr. Ponnusamy says that the civic body was supposed to have completed the work much earlier but the work in Package I got delayed because of crane mismatch. “The civic body lost a little over 25 days.” The Corporation had divided the water supply scheme project into various packages, giving the execution of Package I to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation.

The Package I work involves digging 29.50 m well into the Pilloor Dam, which is with the TANGEDCO, installing six motors to draw the water and laying pipeline till the Periyakombai hillock to convey the water. The execution of the second and third components of the work is by the Corporation.

Mr. Ponnusamy says that when the motors, each with a capacity of 375 hp, arrived, the crane that was at the site was inadequate to handle the motors. The Corporation had to summon a specialised crane to lift and place the motors on the head works.

Of the six motors, the Corporation will use four on a regular basis and retain two as standby to supply 131 million litres a day to the city. The 131 mld will get reduced to 125 mld when the water gets treated and comes out of the treatment plant at Velliangadu.

After travelling around 36 km, the water will reach the Main Storage Reservoir in Ramakrishnapuram, from where it will be distributed to various parts of the city. This will help the civic body boost water supply to the city, especially areas like Singanallur and Ondipudur.

And water supply during Summer 2014 is also expected to be a smooth affair as the Corporation will have over to 180 mld for supply, after taking into account the Siruvani supply.
