Revenue Department officials in Pollachi are probing a tree cutting complaint in Pollachi. Sources in the Department said that a ‘Kondrai’ tree was cut at the old campus of the Pollachi Municipal Girls’ Higher Secondary School. The building has been in disuse ever since the Municipality moved the school to a new campus in 2010.

Parking lot

To put the old campus to better use, the Municipal officials had planned to use the place as a parking lot. And they did so after the Municipal Council granted approval.

It gave on contract the place to the highest bidder, the sources said and added that the contractor reportedly felled the tree.

On receipt of information that the contractor had cut the tree without obtaining permission, members of the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and Congress staged a protest near the old campus.

Revenue Department officials rushed to the spot, ascertained that the contractor had reportedly cut the tree without permission and then seized the cut wood and implements used.

They have initiated departmental action against the contractor.
