The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) cutting branches of trees on Palakkad Road in Kuniamuthur on Tuesday has angered environment activists, who accuse the government agency of cutting more than what was required.

N.I. Jalaludeen of Nature Conservation Society said contractors engaged by Tangedco had cut fully grown branches at the base of the tree.

Sources in the Coimbatore Revenue Department said that they had not issued tree cutting orders in the recent past. If trees had been cut, it was against rules.

An official of Tangedco said that due to strong winds, branches of trees fell on a Low Tension (LT) line that supplied power to about 30 houses in the area. There were reports of frequent power cuts because of the problem.
