City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu on Thursday inaugurated a training centre to prepare constables to be part of a nationwide Crime and Criminal Tracking Networking System.
Sylendra Babu said that a permanent establishment would train police personnel in computerising the data including complaints, FIR, reports, court records.
The system would also help the police units in various States to exchange information relating to crime and criminals.
In the first phase, police stations would be computerised. Then offices of the sub-division officers such as Assistant Commissioners of Police and then the offices of the Deputy Commissioner and Commissionerate would be computerised.
The objective is to have an integrated system for data to ensure access from anywhere.
On completion of the process, the networking will be done first with the State Crime Records Bureau and then in final stages with the National Crime Record Bureau. In future, when the police allow limited access to the records through the website, public could also access the system for ascertaining the stage of their case, action on complaint, passport and job verification papers, stage of applications made for licence for buildings, bars and weapons.
The centre would impart training to police personnel in batches of 20 and all the 3,000 police personnel would be covered over a period of time.
