Training for civil engineering students

February 15, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - COIMBATORE:

As many as 120 civil engineering students, including 22 women candidates, participated in a four-day residential training programme on Sri Ramakrishna Mission Vidyalaya Campus here, from Wednesday.

From lessons on plumbing and electrical works to planning and RCC work, the training aimed at giving an exposure to the students on all aspects of construction so that they will be able to perform better when they join work. Construction companies now train the candidates after recruitment.

Coimbatore Builders’ and Contractors’ Association organised a similar pre-employment training last year and this is the second edition. According to CT Narayanan, former president of the association, final year civil engineering and diploma students from about 25 colleges in the region took part in the training this year.

The association organises a campus recruitment drive every year and it will be held this year too. There is no recruitment assurance to students who take part in the training programme. The objective of the training initiative is to equip the students with field-level knowledge and give them a certificate when they complete it. It will be useful to them when they join work or to find employment.

The course content has been developed by the association and it is almost a technical programme. “We plan to make it a continuous training course as the response from colleges and students is encouraging,” he said.
