Traffic on Avinashi Road hit

January 05, 2013 11:21 am | Updated 11:21 am IST - COIMBATORE:

Traffic on the western end of Avinashi Road was affected on Friday morning after the traffic police closed it to enable the railways carryout repair. Sources said that the railways wanted to replace the sheet covering the stretch of the track above the subway as damage had troubled road users.

The sources said that after the roof of a vehicle passing through the subway rubbed against the bottom of sheet, it gave away, exposing road users to waste falling from passing trains. This, the police said, resulted in traffic jam as motorists stopped their vehicles to let the trains pass and then proceed. They also said that the dangling sheet was a threat.

The police asked the railways to replace the sheet, which they began on Friday morning. And the subway was closed for traffic.

Adding to the trouble was the block at Park Gate Junction. The traffic remained closed on the stretch as the Corporation carried out pipeline laying work to overcome shortage in Siruvani supply.
