The city police have initiated steps to make busy junctions in the city roads pedestrian-friendly. “Of the 54 signals in the city we are planning to make 18 signals easily usable by pedestrians in the first phase,” Deputy Commissioner for Traffic S. Saravanan said.

Twelve of these signals are from Uppilipalayam Junction to Sitra Junction on Avinashi Road as the stretch has many education institutions and hospital. The six other signals are at Big Bazaar Road, Mettupalayam Road, Brookefields Mall and at Gandhipuram.

Signals with times for pedestrians will be erected at all these junctions. “We are planning to allot five to ten seconds for pedestrians in every direction to cross the road, by freezing vehicle movement. Duration will be decided based on pedestrian movement,” he said.

As part of the initiative, zebra crossings will be drawn besides stop line for vehicles. The police said that the corporation and highway officials have agreed to take up the painting works.
