The City Traffic Police are bringing in a series of traffic diversions at important junctions in the city from January 31 to decongest Gandhipuram junction, where traffic is hit over the last few months due to the ongoing flyover construction work.
New Bus Stand
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Pravesh Kumar told newsmen that the Mettupalayam Bus Stand will be fully operational from Saturday and buses from Mettupalayam and Ooty will not come to Gandhipuram. He said that this change has been made after holding talks with private bus operators. Buses from Tirupur should terminate service at the Singanallur Bus Stand.
The stretch of road from Gandhipuram signal to G.P. signal has been made a one-way. Vehicles cannot ply on the opposite direction. Vehicles from Sathy Road and 100-Feet-Road to Gandhipuram should take a diversion through Chinnasamy Road, Avarampalayam Road, Women’s Polytechnic and Bharathiar Road.
Vehicles from Gandhipuram cannot reach the N.H. Road through Mill Road as the stretch is made a one-way. Similarly vehicles will not be permitted from Oppanakara Street to the Avinashi Flyover as it has been made one-way.
Those vehicles from Mettupalayam Road to the Airport, Erode, Tirupur and Salem should take a diversion through ARC Junction, Brooke Bond Road to reach Avinashi Road Flyover. Similarly vehicles from Sathyamangalam to the said places should take diversions at Saravanampatty, Vilankuruchi and Kalapatti Junctions to reach Avinashi Road.
Vehicles from Pollachi and Palakkad to Mettupalayam – except town buses – should take a diversion at Oppanakara Street through Mill Road and Gandhi Park (or Flower Market or D.B. Road) to reach Mettupalayam Road. Vehicles from Pollachi and Palakkad – except those heading to North Coimbatore – should go through Nanjundapuram Road Railway overbridge or Ukkadam by-pass.
These announcements were made after joint inspections and consultative meetings of Coimbatore corporation, police, transport authorities, transport corporation, highways and other departments concerned. But for the routes that have been made one-way, the other diversions are suggestions to save time.
Thirty-six flex boards with directions have been placed at junctions where diversions could be taken to reach the destinations. Stating that many changes were on a trial and error basis, traffic police would bring in changes on a need based approach.
Hoping that these measures would reduce congestion at Gandhipuram, the police are also studying possibilities of carrying out more measures to decongest Gandhipuram.
