Traffic diversion hits road users

Two days after the traffic diversion was announced on arterial roads in the city, absence of signboards and traffic police personnel to regulate traffic caused chaos on many roads on Monday.

Though heavy vehicles from Perundurai were asked to take Villarasampatti Road to reach the bus stand, most of the government and private buses failed to obey the order and reached the city as usual.

They were diverted through Sampath Nagar, Nasiyanur Road, Edayankattu Valasu Road, GH Roundabout to reach Mettur Road and bus stand.

This caused frequent traffic congestion on Nasiyanur Road where gravels were dumped on one side of the road for drainage construction.

At Perundurai Road and Brough Road, the traffic police have placed boards asking buses to stop 100 metres away as flyover work is in progress. But most of the buses halted at the earlier stops affecting the movement of other vehicles.

N. Sampath Kumar of Chinnamuthu Main Street said that allowing heavy vehicles on the narrow stretch caused traffic congestion and blamed the police personnel for poor regulation. “These roads are not meant for heavy vehicles”, he added.

Absence of signboards to execute the diversions at many roads caused confusion among the road users and visitors to the city. Many motorists were worried over the absence of traffic personnel at important junctions.

The junction at Sampath Nagar and Nasiyanur Road witnessed heavy vehicle movement through out the day.

No police personnel were present to regulate the traffic, said M. Amudhavalli of the area.

Though inadequate police personnel is sighted as a reason for poor traffic management in the city for many years now, road users wanted additional personnel to be manned at least at important junctions to prevent chaos.
